COVID-19 and respiratory pathogen panel (RPP) rRT-PCR testing can be performed on a nasopharyngeal swab (NPS). Once collected, the NPS is placed into a specimen tube containing viral transport medium (Hank’s Balanced Salt Solution).
This assay can accurately detect the presence of SARS-CoV-2 virus, as well as various other respiratory pathogens. These two tests can be done individually or together based on the provider’s request.
The COVID-19 test screens for three different SARS-CoV-2-specific genes: the open reading frame (ORF) gene, the envelope (E) gene, and the nucleocapsid (N) gene. A positive result for any of the three genes would indicate the presence of COVID-19 virus. The various targets that can be detected with the respiratory pathogen panel (RPP) assay include influenza A, influenza A H1 [A(H1) and 2009H1N1], influenza A H3, influenza B, respiratory syncytial virus A & B, parainfluenza 1-4, coronavirus 229E, coronavirus NL63, coronavirus OC43, coronavirus HKU1, human metapneumovirus, rhinovirus/enterovirus, adenovirus, human bocavirus, Chlamydophila pneumoniae, and Mycoplasma pneumoniae.
